Relocation
Just east of one of the largest Metropolitan cities, situated between the Long
Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean lies “Paumonock” meaning “land of tribute”,
because of its fishlike shaped. Dutch colonialist christened it “Lange Eilandt”
and Brittish settlers later anglicized the name to “Long Island.”
Long Island is the largest island in the continental United States, extending
approximately 118 miles east-northeast from the mouth of the Hudson River,
adjacent to Manhattan Island. Twenty miles at its widest point, the 1,377
square-mile island is separated from the mainland.
Geographically, Long Island includes the four counties Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau
and Suffolk, but because Brooklyn and Queens are part of the city of New York,
reference to Long Island is commonly known to mean Nassau and Suffolk counties
exclusively
Long Island measures approximately 100 miles from the Nassau-Queen's border to
Montauk Point and 56 miles from the Queens border to Riverhead. From Riverhead,
two forks extend eastward, separated by the waters of the Great Peconic Bay and
Gardiner's Bay.
